Beta Character AI was the old Character.AI website. Character.AI officially retired it on September 24, 2024 and directs people to character.ai or its mobile app. An old beta bookmark is not a separate current version you need to unlock. If you want to begin a different character conversation, Cherrypop offers character chat; it cannot restore your Character.AI account or its history.
What happened to beta Character AI?
The retirement notice says the old website is no longer accessible. Its explanation concerns moving to the current site, not a temporary outage with an announced reopening date. The useful next step is to use the current official service rather than keep retrying a beta URL.
That notice also discussed moving older chats and provided migration buttons and waiting periods at the time. Those instructions describe the 2024 transition. We have not verified those same controls in a current account, and a two-year-old migration notice does not establish what happened to one particular missing conversation.
Old beta, old chats and Legacy are different things
| What you mean by old Character AI | What to do next |
|---|---|
| The beta website design | Use the current official site or app; the retirement notice does not offer a route back. |
| A conversation missing from your account | Treat it as an account/history support issue, not proof the beta site still needs to load. |
| An older Chat Style in the Legacy menu | Check the current Legacy documentation; it describes chat styles, not restoration of the retired website. |
| Your own character concept | Keep your own notes and decide whether to continue it there or start a new interaction elsewhere. |
The Legacy Menu help page, updated September 25, 2026, says older Chat Styles remain selectable for now but will be retired over time with notice. That is a different use of the word legacy. Finding a Legacy menu should not be read as evidence that the beta website has returned.
If your concern is saved conversations
Start with the account that held the conversation. If the expected history is absent, use Character.AI’s help center for the account-specific issue. Include the character or conversation you mean and when you last accessed it. Avoid replacing that support question with a guess that an old URL will recover the data.
Character.AI’s export instructions, updated July 10, 2025, describe a web route through Profile Settings, Account, then Manage Account & Data, followed by Export data. The mobile instructions point to profile settings and Export my data. We have not established which historical chats a particular account’s export will contain or how quickly it will arrive.
Exporting, restoring access and moving a character to another product are separate tasks. A downloaded record does not prove that another service can import it as a functioning conversation. Preserve your own original character description separately if you want to recreate its premise.
Starting a new character conversation on Cherrypop
Cherrypop is relevant if your goal has changed from recovering an old account to creating a new interaction. You can create a realistic or anime character with appearance and personality controls. Scenario, First Message and Additional Personality Details let you describe the setup you want.
For example, begin an original mystery with a 36-year-old archivist who has found a misplaced letter. Put the archive meeting in the scenario, use the first message to introduce the letter, and describe the archivist’s observant, cautious temperament separately. That gives the conversation a clear starting point without pretending to carry over a Character.AI chat or model.
Cherrypop is free to start with limits, with relevant features requiring Premium or Cherries. It is an alternative for a new experience, not a recovery tool. If that is your goal, open Cherrypop’s character chat or create a character with the situation you want to explore.
