Character AI memory works in layers. The model reads only a limited window of recent conversation, plus the character’s Definition, so older messages drop out and the character “forgets” them. On top of that, Character.AI (a general-audience app) lets you save what matters: pin key messages (its lite FAQ, updated September 18, 2026, says 15 memory pins on free and 30 on lite), write backstory and events into Story Memory (added in May 2026; a year earlier the chat memory box held 400 characters), and, on c.ai+, keep auto-captured Facts. Its May 21, 2026 memory post says pinned and Story Memory content is protected when older chat is compressed. None of this guarantees recall; it raises the odds that a detail gets used.
How Character AI memory works
Every AI chat app rebuilds the prompt for each reply, and the model “remembers” only what made it in. On Character.AI, that prompt draws on four kinds of text:
- The character’s Definition. Up to 32,000 characters, per Character.AI’s creator docs. The same docs warn that “as your conversation increases in length, the end of your Definition may be truncated,” so the most important parts belong at the top.
- Recent messages. The rolling part. Character.AI’s help article on forgetting (2023) puts it plainly: “There is a limited amount of conversation context that the character can consider, so it will appear to forget things if they were not mentioned recently.” Its help pages do not publish a context size in tokens or messages.
- Your persona. Your name, look and role, written once in profile settings. See our guide to the Character AI persona for what to put there.
- Saved memory. Pins, Story Memory and Facts, all on the Memory screen described below.
You can shape everything except the size of the recent-message window, which the model and the platform set. The Definition is yours to edit only if you made the character.
Pinned memories
Pinning marks a single message as important. Character.AI’s Pinned Memories help article (updated September 16, 2026) says the feature is free on web and mobile. That article still says you can “save and pin 5 messages in each chat,” but the newer (c.ai) lite FAQ (updated September 18, 2026) gives 15 memory pins on free and 30 on lite. On the web, open the menu next to a message and choose Pin message; on mobile, long-press the message and tap Pin. The May 2026 memory post adds that c.ai+ subscribers “get twice as many pins,” and that pinning now locks a message into Story Memory.
From chat memories to Story Memory
On May 19, 2025, Character.AI rolled out chat memories for all users: a text box of “up to 400 characters of fixed information” per chat. Its announcement was careful: “we can’t guarantee the Character will always use or reference the information exactly as written,” but adding it “increases the likelihood” it gets used.
On May 21, 2026, “Smarter Memory for Smarter Chats” brought pins, Story Memory, Facts and a Memory Usage bar together on a redesigned Memory screen, opened from the notebook icon in the chat header or from the chat menu:
- Story Memory (all users): a place for “backstory, key events, special moments,” and where pinned messages go.
- Facts (c.ai+): details picked up automatically as you chat, in tabs for your persona, the character and side characters. You can add, edit or disable them, and copy them into a new chat.
- Memory Usage: a bar showing what fills the chat’s memory; simple for free users, full on c.ai+.
The same post says Memory “tidies older context in the background,” and that “anything you’ve written into Story Memory or pinned yourself is protected.” So, per Character.AI, what you save stays in place while ordinary chat history is what gets compressed. Being present is still not the same as being used in every reply.
Why Character.AI characters forget
Five common causes of “my character forgot my name” moments:
- It scrolled out. The detail was said once, many messages ago, and never saved. Once it leaves the recent window, the model does not see it.
- The Definition is too long. Character.AI’s creator docs warn that the end of a long Definition may be truncated as the conversation grows, so details placed last can drop out.
- Saved memory contradicts itself. An old Fact, a stale pin or a Story Memory line that no longer matches the plot can pull replies the wrong way.
- It was a bad reply. Character.AI’s troubleshooting guide (updated June 17, 2026) says “sometimes the AI misses,” and a swipe to regenerate is often the right fix.
- Model or serving limits. The same guide notes that “context loss can be model-level or even temporary serving issues.”
How to improve recall on Character.AI
Use each memory tool for the job it does best:
- Pin turning points. A confession, a promise, the moment two characters became allies. Pins keep exact wording, so pin the message that states the fact most clearly, and unpin old beats when the story moves on.
- Write Story Memory as facts, not scenes. “Leah captains the ship; her first mate forgets orders; they are hunting the missing map” beats a paragraph of prose. Update it when the plot changes.
- Put facts about you in your persona. Your name, pronouns and look belong in the persona, which you can set as the default for all chats, so they do not have to be repeated in every chat’s memory.
- Tighten the Definition. If you made the character, keep personality, voice and always-true facts near the top. World details that only matter sometimes fit better in a lorebook, which loads entries only when a keyword comes up (on Character.AI, Lorebook is in beta, with creation on c.ai+, as of September 2026).
- Audit Facts (c.ai+). Open the Memory screen and read what was captured. Edit or disable anything wrong before adding a second, conflicting version.
- Test one fact at a time. Ask about a saved detail without hinting at the answer. If the reply misses, check where the fact is saved.

How memory works on other platforms
The mechanism is the same everywhere: a limited context window, fixed text that is sent every time, and some way to save or summarize what happened. The controls differ.
Janitor AI: Chat Memory
Janitor AI’s help center says its own model, JLLM, reads “around 8k-9k tokens, give or take,” and that when the limit is hit it starts “forgetting” the oldest parts of the conversation. Its token guide splits the prompt into permanent tokens (advanced prompts, Chat Memory, personality and scenario, sent with every message) and temporary tokens (the chat itself, which gets pushed out). Its guides recommend 1,500 to 2,500 permanent tokens at most.
Chat Memory is a per-chat text panel. You can write it yourself or generate a summary; per Janitor’s changelog of August 19, 2026, a “summarize since last update” option works on handwritten memory too. A “memory replaces old messages” toggle is off by default, which means your memory is added on top of the conversation and nothing is removed. Automatic summarizing runs only when that toggle is on, and has its own off switch. The Chat Memory guide suggests a short, structured template (environment, relationship dynamic, current plot points, character notes, user notes, important past events) and warns that “more isn’t better.”
SillyTavern: summaries and lorebooks
SillyTavern is a local interface you connect to a model of your choice, so the context window depends on that model. Its built-in Summarize extension writes a running summary every X messages or words and inserts it into the prompt at a position you choose. You can edit the summary, pause updates or restore the previous one. The docs are frank that summaries “may lose some important details or contain hallucinations,” and advise checking and correcting them by hand.
For world details, SillyTavern uses World Info, its version of a lorebook: keyword-triggered entries added to the prompt only when they come up.
Cherrypop: session summary and core memories
On Cherrypop, an uncensored AI chat and roleplay platform for adults 18+, each chat builds its prompt from the character’s card, your persona (if you pick one for that chat) and a bounded window of recent messages; when space runs short, the oldest messages drop first. The character card comes from what you enter when you create a character: personality choices plus Scenario, First Message and Additional Personality Details. An existing chat keeps the card it started with, so after editing a character, test the change in a new chat.
Memory, in the chat’s settings panel, is a premium feature marked Experimental. For each chat it shows:
- Conversation Summary: a summary of the chat so far, which you can read and edit.
- Core Memories: short facts you can add, edit or delete, up to 50 per chat and 500 characters each.
The panel is designed to fill the summary and extract facts automatically as you chat. Whether the summary and core memories are generated and fed into replies also depends on features that may not be switched on for every account. For anything that must stay true in every chat, put it in the character’s card or your persona as well, and check the Memory panel now and then. Like every tool here, memory guides replies rather than guaranteeing them. Cherrypop is free to start, with limits; Memory needs a premium plan.

What to check in any AI chat with memory
If you are choosing an AI girlfriend with memory, or any AI chatbot with long-term memory, skip the marketing words and look for four things:
- Can you see what it saved? A memory screen you can read beats a black box.
- Can you edit it? Wrong memories are worse than none. Look for edit and delete, not just add.
- Is it per chat or shared? Know whether a new chat starts clean or carries saved facts over.
- Does the vendor promise too much? Every system above is limited by what fits in the prompt. Treat “remembers everything” claims with suspicion.
FAQ
Does Character.AI have a good memory?
It has more tools than it used to: pins and Story Memory for everyone, Facts on c.ai+. Recall is still limited by how much recent conversation the model can read, and Character.AI itself says it cannot guarantee saved details are used exactly as written. Saving the facts that matter makes the biggest difference.
How much memory does Character.AI have?
Character.AI does not publish its context window size. The published numbers are 32,000 characters for a character’s Definition and, per its lite FAQ (updated September 18, 2026), 15 memory pins on free and 30 on lite (an older Pinned Memories article, updated September 16, 2026, still says 5 per chat), with c.ai+ getting twice as many pins and more Memory per its May 2026 post. The chat memory box launched in May 2025 held up to 400 characters.
Can Character.AI remember past chats?
Not by default: pins and Story Memory belong to one chat. When you start a new chat, c.ai+ offers an option to copy Facts into the new chat’s memory. Your persona also carries across chats if you set it as the default for all chats.
Why does my character forget my name?
Usually because it was mentioned once and has scrolled out of the recent window. Put your name in your persona, and check that no saved memory or Fact gives a different one.
Is there an AI chatbot with long-term memory?
Many apps add long-term memory tools: saved facts, summaries, pins or lorebooks. All of them are still limited by what fits in the prompt. The useful question is whether you can see and edit what it keeps.
