Civitai is a platform for sharing and discovering AI model resources. Finding a model, downloading a particular version and generating an image are separate decisions. Start with what you intend to make and where you intend to run the model, rather than selecting solely by a sample picture.
If you want an original character with personality and a conversation, Cherrypop’s character creator offers a more direct companion workflow.
Model discovery is different from image generation
Civitai’s official project description describes a model-sharing community with uploads, browsing and feedback. Its official command-line documentation separately describes catalog reads, versioned downloads and paid generation. Those distinctions matter even if you use the website rather than a command line.
| Decision | Question to answer | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Choose a resource | What type, version and model family is this? | Every appealing example uses an interchangeable model |
| Download it | Which exact file and compatible environment do I need? | The default version is the version used in an old example |
| Generate remotely | Is this specific resource available for the selected generation route? | A downloadable file must also be hosted |
| Use the result | What permissions and output requirements apply? | A public listing settles every use-rights question |
Build a selection card for the actual project
Imagine a small set of original landscape illustrations for a fictional hiking journal. You want a coherent visual treatment and enough space for captions. A useful selection card makes those requirements explicit before you try several models.
| Record | Why it changes your choice |
|---|---|
| Intended medium and composition | A photo-oriented sample is weak evidence for an ink illustration |
| Model name, version and resource type | A checkpoint and an add-on serve different roles |
| Base-model family and dependencies | Your chosen components must be suitable for the same workflow |
| Example settings and references, when disclosed | The image may depend on more than its text prompt |
| Terms or permissions that matter to the project | Resolve intended use before building a series |
| Accepted output and actual setup | Keep evidence of what produced the usable asset |
The card is deliberately more specific than a popularity score. A widely downloaded resource can be a poor choice for your subject, environment or intended use. For the hiking journal, a simpler setup that produces a suitable composition may be more useful than a complex stack whose influences you cannot explain.
Pin the version, then inspect the actual file
The official CLI distinguishes model IDs from version IDs and documents file planning and hash verification for downloads. Use the same discipline when organizing resources manually: retain the version, file name and source together. A file-integrity check establishes that the bytes match an expected file; it does not prove output quality, compatibility or every security property.
- Choose one resource whose description and examples match the project’s purpose.
- Record the exact version and its expected base-model context.
- Read the dependencies and applicable usage terms before obtaining or running it.
- Make a small, self-owned test subject the first task, then record the complete setup of any accepted output.
This article does not provide a local installation recipe or recommend a particular downloadable model. Those choices require environment-specific checks. It also does not infer that every listed resource is available in a consumer account’s hosted generator.
Hosted availability and cost need their own checks
Civitai’s generator system document distinguishes model resources from generation coverage and describes Buzz as generation currency. The document contains developer corrections, so it should not be treated as a current consumer menu or plan table. We use it only for that bounded architectural distinction.
The CLI documentation similarly distinguishes a cost estimate from an executed job, and warns that a requested checkpoint can be substituted. That is a useful reason to verify the resource that will actually run, not merely the resource you originally selected. No current free-credit allowance or fixed cost per image is asserted here.
Choose a companion workflow when interaction is the goal
Civitai’s resource-oriented approach is useful when selecting models and controlling a generation setup is part of the project. Cherrypop focuses on creating an original character with appearance, personality and an opening scenario, then moving into chat and supported media creation. Those are different starting points.
Cherrypop is free to start with limits; relevant features can require Premium or Cherries. It is not presented as a model-download service or a guarantee of output equivalence. Create a character you can interact with when a continuing companion matters more than managing model files.
