Friends to lovers is a romance trope in which two people who are already close friends slowly realize they have fallen for each other, and then have to decide whether to risk the friendship to find out. The attraction is not the obstacle. The obstacle is everything they could lose.
It is one of the most loved setups in romance novels, film and fan fiction. Here is how it works, its variants, the best-known examples, and how to write or roleplay it.
What is the friends to lovers trope?
In a friends to lovers story, the couple’s first relationship is friendship, and a real one: shared history, inside jokes, the person you call when things go wrong. The plot moves them from “you’re my best friend” to “you’re the one,” usually over a long stretch of time.
Three things make it work on the page:
- The friendship is established. The reader has to believe these two already matter to each other before romance enters the picture.
- Something shifts. A new partner, a move, a wedding, a night that goes differently than usual. The old balance stops working.
- There is a real cost. If it goes wrong, they lose their closest person, and often a whole friend group with them.
Why friends to lovers works
Readers keep choosing it. In a 2016 Fansplaining survey of fan fiction readers (7,610 responses), friends to lovers was the single most-loved trope. In a January 2025 Talker Research survey for ThriftBooks of 2,000 American romance readers, it came second (44%), one point behind forbidden romance.
- The love is already proven. These two have seen each other sick, broke and heartbroken. When the romance arrives, it rests on something solid.
- The stakes are emotional. No villain is needed. The fear of ruining the best thing in your life is tension enough.
- Dramatic irony. Everyone around them can see it except the two of them.
- It feels possible. Plenty of real couples started as friends, which makes the fantasy feel close to home.
The beats of the friends to lovers arc
- The baseline. Show the friendship working: the rituals, the teasing, the easy trust.
- The disruption. Something tilts it: one of them starts dating someone, gets engaged, moves away, or needs a plus-one.
- The first noticing. A look held too long, a flash of jealousy, a moment of seeing the friend as someone other people want.
- Denial. “It’s just us.” Both explain the feeling away, usually to protect the friendship.
- The line crossed. A kiss, a confession, a night together.
- The fallout. Awkwardness, avoidance, a pretend “that never happened.” The friendship itself now looks at risk.
- The choice. One of them stops hiding and says it plainly, and they choose each other with the history intact.
Variants of friends to lovers
- Best friends to lovers. The classic: the one person who knows you best.
- Childhood friends to lovers. Two people who grew up in the same place, lost touch and meet again years later. The romance happens in the present; the shared past is history that gives them a head start.
- Best friend’s brother or sister. Someone you know well through your best friend but have never let yourself think about that way. It adds a second risk: the friendship with the sibling.
- Roommates to lovers. Friendship plus forced proximity. Shared keys, shared kitchen, nowhere to hide.
- Coworkers to lovers. The “work spouse” who makes the job bearable becomes more.
- Friends with benefits. They agree to keep it physical and casual. The rule against catching feelings is there to be broken.
- The pact. “If we’re both single at 35, we marry each other.” The deadline arrives and forces the question.
- Friends fake dating. One needs a date for a wedding or a family trip, the other volunteers, and pretending turns out to be easy.
Friends to lovers vs slow burn vs enemies to lovers
These three get mixed up because they often appear together. Two describe where the couple starts; one describes pace.
| Trope | Where they start | Source of tension | Typical pace |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friends to lovers | Close friends who trust each other | Fear of losing the friendship | Usually slow |
| Enemies to lovers | Rivals or opponents | Pride, conflict, opposing goals | Usually slow |
| Slow burn | Anywhere | Delay: the payoff is held back | Slow by definition |
Slow burn is a pace that pairs with either starting point. Enemies to lovers runs on friction; friends to lovers runs on warmth. Enemies have to learn to trust each other. Friends already do, and have to learn to want each other out loud.
Famous friends to lovers examples
Film and TV
- Harry and Sally, When Harry Met Sally… (1989). They meet in 1977 as new University of Chicago graduates sharing a drive to New York, arguing the whole way about whether men and women can ever just be friends. They run into each other again five years later, only become friends five years after that, and Harry’s New Year’s Eve speech settles the argument. Written by Nora Ephron, directed by Rob Reiner.
- Emma and Dexter, One Day. They meet on their university graduation night in Edinburgh, 15 July 1988, and the story checks in on the same date every year for twenty years as their friendship and near-misses pile up. David Nicholls’ 2009 novel became a 2011 film and a 2024 Netflix series starring Ambika Mod and Leo Woodall. Famously bittersweet.

One last vacation together in Palm Springs forces the question. Kirkus called it a When Harry Met Sally update. Netflix adapted it as a 2026 film starring Emily Bader and Tom Blyth.
- Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton, Romancing Mister Bridgerton by Julia Quinn (2002). The best-friend’s-brother variant: Colin is the brother of Penelope’s closest friend, Eloise. Do friends really become lovers?
Often. A 2021 study by Danu Anthony Stinson and colleagues at the University of Victoria, published in Social Psychological and Personality Science, surveyed nearly 1,900 university participants and crowdsourced adults: 66% said their current or most recent romantic relationship began as a friendship. Among the university sample, friends-first couples had typically been friends for one to two years before it turned romantic, and nearly half named “friends first” as their preferred way to start a relationship.
How to write or roleplay friends to lovers
- Earn the friendship first. Give them rituals: a standing Sunday call, a shared joke, a bar they always go to. The reader has to feel what is at risk.
- Pick a clear disruption. A new partner, an engagement, a job in another city, a wedding that needs a plus-one. Something has to make “the way we’ve always been” stop working.
- Use the history. Callbacks to old trips and old jokes are the trope’s superpower. Strangers cannot do that.
- Give the fallout real weight. The worst version is the one where nothing is at stake. Let them fear losing each other.
- Make the confession plain. After all that denial, a simple, honest line beats a speech.
