Ideogram AI can generate and remix images. Canvas adds local editing for accounts that still have access to it. The useful choice is how much of the image should change. A fresh idea, an altered visual treatment and a correction to one object should not automatically start the same operation.
For a character you also want to chat with, Cherrypop’s character creator serves the continuing character experience.
Choose the smallest useful editing scope
The Canvas overview explicitly limits its instructions to users who still have Canvas access and describes a version 2.0 generation workflow. The Canvas steps below are conditional on that access; they do not describe Ideogram 4.0 controls. If Canvas is unavailable, use Remix for a broader change and an image editor for precise text placement.
| Problem | Route to consider | What you should expect to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| The whole composition needs a different treatment | Remix | The entire regenerated image |
| One object needs replacing | Magic Fill, if Canvas is available | The masked area and the join with its surroundings |
| A heading must have exact spelling and placement | Canvas Text, if available; otherwise an image editor | The editable text layer and final crop |
| The subject should recur across images | Character Reference with a supported workflow | Identity details in each result; no automatic guarantee |
The Remix guide distinguishes current Ideogram 4.0 from earlier models. In 4.0, the model blends the parent image with your edit instruction automatically; there is no Strength slider, and you can choose another aspect ratio or Original. Earlier models expose the Strength control and inherit a locked parent aspect ratio. Check which version you are using before following older settings advice.
A poster that needs two different kinds of text
Imagine a fictional observatory poster: a telescope on a hill, a small sign beside a path and a large event heading above the scene. The sign belongs inside the illustration. The event heading is publication information. They may look related, but they have different accuracy requirements.
| Element | Need | Practical decision |
|---|---|---|
| Telescope and hill | A coherent illustration | Generate or remix the scene |
| Small fictional sign | Plausible text integrated with scenery | An image edit can explore the appearance; inspect every letter |
| Event heading | Exact wording and placement | Use an editable text layer |
| Date and access information | No ambiguity or invented facts | Supply verified copy; proofread it after export |
This separation prevents a common wasteful loop: regenerating the entire image to repair one date. Keep essential facts in a controllable layer whenever that meets the design. A visually convincing sign is not an excuse to tolerate incorrect public information.
Use Magic Fill when the accepted background matters
Ideogram’s Magic Fill guide describes masking the area to change and positioning a generation window that includes useful surrounding context. For the observatory poster, replacing an unwanted bench should not require a new sky, hill and telescope. Mask the relevant area, then describe the intended local result.
- Save the accepted poster image before editing.
- Mask the bench and enough of its immediate setting to make the replacement understandable.
- Write a focused change request, such as a clear section of path, without adding unrelated scene instructions.
- Inspect the new path, nearby shadows and object boundaries. Keep the version only if the repair improves the poster.
For this repair, success means removing the unwanted bench while preserving the poster’s useful composition. It does not mean maximizing detail or changing the atmosphere. If an edit solves the bench but distorts the telescope, it has failed this specific brief.
Keep exact typography editable
The Text tool documentation lists font, size, weight, color and layer-order controls. Those controls serve a different purpose from asking an image model to render lettering inside a scene. For the large heading, choose the wording and placement directly, then compare it at the final display size.
If you deliberately integrate lettering into a generated material, treat the result as imagery and proofread it again. The original text layer may have been correct while the generated interpretation changes characters. Do not remove the editable source until the final artwork is accepted.
Export the intended area
The Canvas overview documents a download window for selecting the final composition. A canvas can contain alternatives and references outside the final poster. Confirm the selected region rather than assuming every visible working asset belongs in the export. The documentation contains differing plan references for PNG access, so this guide makes no plan-level format entitlement claim; check your account’s available download options.
Open the saved file independently. Inspect its crop, spelling, dimensions and fine details. A successful edit inside Canvas and an acceptable final file are separate checks.
A visual character reference is not a conversation
Ideogram documents Character Reference for carrying visual identity into supported image workflows. Cherrypop addresses another part of character creation: defining personality and a scenario, then interacting with that character. Choose according to what you want to do after the picture exists.
For an original companion project, create the character, establish the opening situation and then explore supported image or video creation. Cherrypop is free to start with limits; relevant features may require Premium or Cherries. It is not presented as a substitute for Canvas typography or a promise of exact visual consistency. Build an original character you can interact with when that is your next step.
