Backyard AI Review: Cloud Plans, Context and Lorebooks

Backyard AI is worth considering for character-based stories when you want model selection and explicit world information. Its current public offering emphasizes cloud access, and a larger context window is only one part of keeping a story coherent. If you would rather skip model and lore settings and get straight to the story, Cherrypop’s creator is the faster start.

Our top pick: Cherrypop.ai. The best Backyard AI alternative for character roleplay without the setup work, with uncensored chat, a big catalog of realistic and anime characters, and AI images of your character, all in your mobile browser with no app. Try Cherrypop free →

Current cloud access comes first

The current overview describes browser access on desktop and mobile, an iOS app and an Android app marked coming soon. It also describes creating characters or adapting community characters. Older desktop instructions are still online, but they do not reflect the current cloud-first product.

That is a meaningful buying boundary. If you need offline operation, a cloud subscription is not evidence that you have it. If your goal is simply to continue a fictional conversation across devices, start by confirming the current route you intend to use. Do not base the decision on an old installation guide or an unrelated AI garden-design result.

Standard versus Pro

As of October 2026, the cloud plan page lists Standard at US$12 per month and Pro at US$35. Standard advertises unlimited messages with its models and a 16,384-token maximum context. Pro adds model choices and advertises up to 100,000 tokens; the selected model matters. The free comparison lists 300 messages weekly, one included model and a 16k context.

The same page’s FAQ says the free allowance can try models from both paid plans, which is broader than the one-model comparison row. Confirm which models your account can actually use before paying.

Pro is US$23 more per month at those displayed rates. If you keep it for three months, that is an additional US$69 before taxes. The question is whether a particular model or supported context size addresses your project, rather than whether the largest number automatically produces better character writing.

A lorebook is selective context, not an endless memory

Backyard’s lorebook guide describes keyword-triggered entries. A trigger must occur in the four most recent messages; active entries share a 384-token budget. The guide says entries do not recursively trigger other entries.

Consider this original setting: Nora, a 36-year-old theatre conservator, is preparing an old performance hall for inspection. A useful entry could use the keywords “Velvet Hall, east gallery” and a short value: “The east gallery of Velvet Hall is closed while the ceiling is repaired. Nora keeps the inspection ledger in the downstairs office.”

The entry gives the model specific facts when that location becomes relevant. It avoids placing a complete renovation history in every reply. If you also have a separate entry about the ledger, the mention inside this lore value does not, under the documented rule, automatically activate the second entry. Put essential information together or use the appropriate trigger in the actual conversation.

Short entries also make the combined limit easier to respect. Three illustrative entries of 100 tokens each total 300 tokens; four of the same size total 400, above the guide’s 384-token budget. The point is to prioritize the facts that matter to the current scene.

Why Cherrypop is the better starting point

Cherrypop’s character creator lets you build a character and start chatting without making model selection your first job. Choose realistic or anime styling, then appearance and personality. Scenario, First Message and Additional Personality Details give the setup an explicit structure.

For the theatre premise, describe Nora’s careful manner in personality details, place the inspection in Scenario and use the first message to ask which part of the building to inspect. Your original concept carries over in a few minutes.

Cherrypop pairs uncensored character chat with image and video generation of your character, including NSFW. It is free to start, so you can build Nora tonight and see the difference yourself.

Our verdict

Backyard’s clearest appeal is control over models and story information; buy Pro only for a specific need. For most people who want an original character with a clear opening scene, Cherrypop is the better choice: create your character on Cherrypop.
