In the mobile app, Chai’s founder announced in September 2026 that every message would cost “pieces,” with free pieces handed out daily. In some regions, Chai says using the service requires a paid subscription. On the web, Pro costs $9.99 a week or $159.99 a year, as of October 3, 2026.

Is Chai AI free? Web and app are two different deals
Chai runs two products. The web app is at chai-ai.com, and the CHAI app is on iPhone and Android. Chai’s FAQ calls them “separate platforms with no data sharing between the two,” and the free deal is different on each. Web Pro is sold on chai-ai.com, while the app’s subscriptions are bought through Apple or Google, so check which product a price belongs to before you pay.
What the free web plan includes
Chai’s FAQ says “You can chat with AI characters immediately after signing up with Google,” and that Pro “unlocks endless conversations, faster responses, and access to the most advanced AI models.” The upgrade screen compares the free Basic plan with Pro like this:
- Characters: “25M+ Bots” is marked “Limited” on Basic and fully included on Pro.
- Chat model: “CHAI Ultra AI” is Pro only. On the web, Ultra is the name of the model, not a separate plan.
- Memory: “Persisted Memory” is Pro only.
- Ads: “No Ads, No Sponsored Content” is listed as a Pro benefit.
Chai does not publish a daily message number for Basic. In our Chai AI review, a free web account on September 27, 2026 sent seven messages without hitting a cap, but the image, video and voice buttons all opened an upgrade screen on the first click, and the Create button led to Chai Studio, marked “only on MAX.”
Is the Chai app still free? Pieces explained
If the app feels less free than it used to, this is why. In a post in the official r/ChaiApp community, signed “Will, Founder,” Chai’s founder wrote that the app was “working towards migrating to a system where every single message costs pieces,” with “our best AI costing more than the cheapest.” His reasons and promises, in his words:
- Free pieces: “We will give user free pieces every single day.”
- Why: “as the price of GPU’s has doubled this year, this unlimited model is no longer sustainable.”
- Subscribers: “Subscribers who have unlimited messages – will continue to get unlimited messages.”
Chai has not published how many free pieces you get a day or what each model costs per message, so check the balance in your own app. Pieces packs and the app’s Premium and Ultra subscriptions are in-app purchases, priced in your App Store or Google Play account rather than on Chai’s website. Chai’s own company page says its revenue comes from “consumer subscriptions and in-app purchases in the CHAI app.”
Why you can’t use Chai for free in some countries
Chai’s Safety Center says it plainly: “In some regions, use of the service requires a paid subscription.” Its company facts page (figures as of October 1, 2026) repeats it. Chai does not list which regions, so if the app asks you to subscribe before your first message, that may be why, rather than a problem with your account. Chai describes the service as 18+, and the App Store rates the app 18+.

The weekly plan is the expensive way in. Fifty-two weeks at $9.99 comes to $519.48, about 3.2 times the annual price. The pricing page also shows the weekly plan as “60% OFF” a struck-through $24.99; judge it by the $9.99 you pay, not the discount. On September 27, our review also saw a flash-sale paywall offering the year at $117.99, so check for a sale price before you subscribe.
The free trial is a year, unless you cancel
The trial reads “$0 today” and “Then $159.99/year.” Miss the 24-hour window and you are billed for a full year, not a week. Chai’s FAQ says “You can cancel your subscription at any time from your account settings,” and you keep Pro until the period ends. Our review could not find those settings on a free web account, so find the cancel option as soon as a trial starts. In the app, cancel in your Apple or Google subscription settings; deleting the app does not cancel. Chai’s web terms (February 2026) say nothing about refunds.
How to use Chai AI for free
- Try the web app. Basic on chai-ai.com is a separate free plan from the app’s pieces.
- Use your daily pieces in the app. Spend them on the cheaper model for casual chats.
- Skip the trial unless you will pay. It turns into $159.99 after 24 hours.
- Avoid “free Chai Pro” mods. Unofficial app files and sites using the Chai name are not from Chai Research. Pay only through chai-ai.com or the official app.
Is Chai worth paying for?
Stay free if you mostly chat with other people’s characters a little each day. Pay if you want the full library, the Ultra model and memory that persists, and take the annual plan if you are sure, since weekly costs over three times as much across a year. If you want to build your own character on the web, budget for Pro plus MAX, because creation is a MAX feature.
